Polly Pittman, the director of the Fitzhugh Mullan Institute for Health Workforce Equity at George Washington University commented on nurses staffing levels saying “This is the first time in 40 years that there has been a decline in the number of nurses in the economy, in the workplace, and it’s a real shocker,” Pittman said. “We have system-level problems that are causing a leakage in the current nursing workforce and that needs to be addressed.” In this article Patricia Pittman recommends several approaches that could directly affect the nurse pipeline.
