2018 Atlantic Fellow for Health Equity, Christina Rosenthal, was profiled by Black Enterprise for launching Determined to be a Doctor Someday (DDS), an initiative to develop the next generation of healthcare professionals who will be representative of the communities they serve. The six-month program’s objective is to stimulate and encourage minority and under-represented individuals’ interests in professional healthcare programs by exposing qualified participants to the different doctorate degrees available. The Universidad Nacional Arturo Jauretche, recently awarded 2018 Atlantic Fellow for Health Equity, Jonatan Konfino for his research project on non communicable diseases that aim to improve the readiness of public health care facilities to provide higher quality services for NCDs in two underserved districts of the Buenos Aires metropolitan area. The GWMI hosted members of the Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea institute for Health and Social Affairs to discuss how U.S. policies address challenges in health workforce. Earlier this year, the Institute also hosted an Argentine delegation of Provincial Ministers of Health, Senators, and Chamber of Commerce leaders.
The Leaders for Health Equity Fellowship Program is officially a member of the Atlantic Fellows Community and will now be known as the Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity (AFHE). This first full global cohort of change makers includes advocates, lawyers, artists, business professionals, health practitioners, government officials, academics, and researchers. The Fellows programs are an intentional effort to bring together mid-career individuals from diverse professions, backgrounds and areas of expertise to learn from one another, find solutions to pressing problems, and achieve demonstrable impact. The Milken Institute School of Public Health at the George Washington University and the Beyond Flexner Alliance today announced the selection of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation Awards for Excellence in Social Mission in Health Professions Education. The purpose of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation Awards is to recognize outstanding leadership in promoting social mission in health professions education. Social mission is defined as activities or initiatives that teach, model, or improve community engagement, diversity, disparities reduction, value based care, or engagement with the social determinants of health. Social mission enhancement means making programs not only better, but fairer. Read more
