U.S. Prescription Contraception Workforce Tracker
The U.S. Prescription Contraception Workforce Tracker monitors the location, provider type, and distribution/provider density of the prescription contraception workforce, with the goal of providing evidence-based support for policies and programs that can address gaps in contraceptive equity. The tracker allows researchers and others to compare states and counties across multiple aspects of the contraceptive workforce.
Use the U.S. Prescription Contraception Workforce Tracker to:
- Examine state variation in the prescription contraception workforce. Nearly half a million reproductive age women* live in counties with fewer than one contraception prescriber per 1,000 of these women.
- Track the workforce over time. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, there were significant changes in many sectors of the workforce, including the contraception workforce, that persisted through 2021. In 2019, 38,563 OBGYNs in the U.S. prescribed contraception compared to 38,704 in 2020 and 37,279 in 2021.
- Break down county-level workforce data. Out of 3,006 U.S. counties, 1,208 (40%) of counties in 2019, 1,334 (44%) counties in 2020, and 1,454 (48%) counties in 2021 had more advanced practice clinicians providing prescription contraception than physicians.
- Request the data to use in your own analysis of this workforce. If you would like access to the database, please submit a request.
