About the Data

The GWMI Reproductive Health Workforce project relies on several unique data sources that create a comprehensive national database containing identified data at the provider level. Below are high-level summaries of the data sources used to construct the database. This database allows us to track providers by specialty, type of services provided, payers, and geographic distribution.

County-level data on prescription contraception providers are available to interested researchers; please complete a request form. Contact Julia Strasser with questions about the database.
  • IQVIA: We use two datasets from IQVIA, a proprietary health information company that aggregates data from multiple sources for healthcare analysis and business solutions 1) prescription claims (to identify prescription contraception providers by specialty and county) and 2) pre-adjudicated medical claims (to identify providers of IUD, implant, shot, tubal ligation, and vasectomy, by specialty).
  • National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES): We use the NPPES dataset (2019, 2020, and 2021) to identify provider type and location (state and county) of all active providers.
  • U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey: We use the 2019 American Community Survey to determine the number of reproductive-age women (ages 15-44 years) at the county level.
  • AMA Masterfile & Historical Residency File: We use the AMA Masterfile and Historical Residency File (2019) to identify the residency training programs for physicians in our dataset.
  • Transformed Medicaid Statistical Information System (T-MSIS): We use the T-MSIS Medicaid claims (2016, 2017, and 2018) to identify which providers offer services to the Medicaid population.
