AboutIn 2022, the Mullan Institute published a series of evidence reviews to introduce readers to six domains of health workforce equity (HWE), understand how they are deeply intertwined, and consider some of the policy levers available to improve HWE. The six domains span: (1) who enters the health workforce, (2) how they are educated and trained, (3) how they are distributed, (4) whom they serve, (5) how they practice, and (6) under what conditions they work.
Key to defining these domains is identifying valid measures to track progress in each of them and hold relevant stakeholders accountable for laws, policies, programs, and practices that shape health workforce equity. The Mullan Institute has taken an initial step in addressing this need by defining 18 HWE metrics and corresponding state-level measures across the six health workforce equity domains. These measures are used to present state-level HWE data in a web-based, interactive tracker, providing a proof of concept for measuring HWE across states. A companion methods document provides additional details for each measure, including data sources and the methodology used to construct it at the time the mapping tool was developed. The Health Workforce Equity mapping tool is a beta version data visualization resource. User feedback is sought to aid in the ongoing development and refinement of HWE metrics and corresponding measures. Please send feedback to [email protected].
