Clese Erikson chaired the 16th International Health Workforce Collaborative, October 25-28, 2016, an invitation-only gathering of leading workforce experts and policy leaders from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. The meeting included an in-depth exploration of shared workforce challenges across the countries related to patient centered care, credentialing, disruptive innovations, and leadership. Patricia Pittman and Edward Salsberg presented at the conference which was hosted this year by the U.S. in Washington, DC. Planning has begun for the 17th conference which will take place in New Zealand in spring 2018 and Ms. Erikson will chair the U.S. delegation.

September 11, 2016 │News - The GWHWI co-hosted a conference on Health Workforce Innovations with the Texas Medical Center in Houston. The goal of this meeting was to identify promising health workforce innovations that support delivery system transformation and develop recommendations for their implementation. GWHWI members Patricia Pittman, Clese Erikson, and Edward Salsberg presented on behalf of GWHWI.

This story features several state initiatives to address a doctor shortage that is going to get worse in much of the nation, especially in states with large rural areas or high concentrations of minorities. The solution to the shortage is believed to be producing more doctors, which the nation gradually doing. The AAMC says medical school enrollment — nearly 87,000 — has increased 25 percent since 2002.

On September 17, 2015, a group of researchers, policymakers, and workforce experts came together to celebrate the official launch of the George Washington University Health Workforce Institute (GWHWI). Guest speakers Karen DeSalvo, Acting Assistant Secretary for Health and Tim Evans, the Senior Director for Health, Nutrition and Population Global Practice at the World Bank Group, praised the GWHWI as an important national and global initiative. In addition, GW's public health dean Lynn Goldman stated that the institute will fulfill the public service goal set forth by GW’s strategic plan.
