January 16, 2017 │Research - Why we need more black doctors
This opinion piece, authored by David Williams and GWHWI co-director Fitzhugh Mullan, states that the overall number of minority physicians, including black female physicians, is increasing, though not as rapidly as it should. It suggests that black people need far greater access to culturally connected physicians who understand their lives and their challenges as much as their clinical needs.
January 2017 │Research - Medicaid Expansion And Grant Funding Increases Helped Improve Community Health Center Capacity
This Heath Affairs article analyzes how Medicaid expansions and increases in grant funding improved the capacity of community health centers to serve their low-income patients, including mental health services. Authors include GWHWI members Xinxin Han and Leighton Ku.
January 2017 │Research - Do Years of Experience With EHRs Matter for Productivity in Community Health Centers?
This study investigates how years of experience with an electronic health record (EHR) relate to productivity in community health centers (CHCs). Specifically, authors evaluate how staffing mix varied with years of EHR experience, and whether years of EHR experience had differential impact on staffing productivity. Findings suggest that EHRs do not negatively impact staff productivity in CHCs, and in fact may improve productivity in the long run. Authors include GWHWI members Patricia Pittman, Leah Masselink, and Leighton Ku.
September 23, 2016 │Research - Workforce Planning and Development in Times of Delivery System Transformation
A research study by GWHWI members Patricia Pittman and Ellen Scully-Russ, explores the dynamic processes and interactions by which workforce planning and development (WFPD) is evolving in this new environment. A case study design is used to examine how workforce changes are being managed by Kaiser Permanente and the Montefiore Health System.
September 21, 2016 │Research - The Healthcare Professional Workforce: New Directions in Theory and Practice
A new book on the healthcare workforce, The Healthcare Professional Workforce: New Directions in Theory and Practice, was published by Oxford Press. This book is comprised of seven unique chapters alongside commentaries from heads of healthcare organizations and influential physicians, providing a theoretical and practical benchmark for understanding the next generation of human capital in one of society's most important labor sectors. GWHWI member James Cawley is among the contributing authors of chapter 3, Transformation of the Nonphysician Health Professions. Preview the chapter here.
September 2016 │Research -  Factors Determining Medical Staff Configurations in Community Health Centers: CEO Perspectives
A study in the Journal of Healthcare Management explores perceptions of CEOs of community health centers (CHCs) that have a variety of staff configurations. Authors found that CEOs considered two major dimensions in their decisions: choice and balance of providers (physicians versus nurse practitioners [NPs] and physician assistants [PAs]) and configuration of clinical support staff. Authors include GWHWI members Patricia Pittman, Leah Masselink, and Leighton Ku.

November 4, 2015 │Research - GME Squeeze for U.S. Med School Graduates Unlikely
This report looks at the last decade of data on the increasing numbers of U.S. medical graduates as well as trends in the growth of  first year residency positions around the country. Researches from the GWHWI find that residency slots will continue to exceed the number of U.S. medical graduates seeking them for at least the next decade.
November 2015 │Research - The U.S. Nephrology Workforce 2015: Developments and Trends
This report from members of the GWHWI, identifies several key factors that could influence the specialty's future. This and future analyses are intended to provide data and insights to help guide the nephrology community through this period of transformation in both kidney care and health care delivery.
September 2015 │Research - The changing roles of registered nurses in Pioneer Accountable Care Organizations
This study from GWHWI co-director Patricia Pittman, suggests that Pioneer ACO leaders believe that payment models are affecting the deployment of the health workforce and that these changes are, in turn, driving outcomes.
April 23 2015 │Research - Access and Innovation in a Time of Rapid Change: Physician Assistant Scope of Practice
The article describes a synopsized history of physician assistant practice including a description of the legal and medical communities' unwillingness to recognize the benefits of increased PA utilization, including marked increases in access to, and quality of, care in both general and specialized medical fields. After an examination of the development of the medical practice regulations that expand many healthcare professionals' scopes of practice to tasks previously restricted to physicians, the paper identifies the PA profession as a workforce innovation ripe for increased integration into the PA-physician team in the future of healthcare.
January 2015 │Research - Community Health Centers Employ Diverse Staffing Patterns
GWHWI researchers found that there is no “optimal” model for staffing primary care practices. Rather than having a monolithic one-size fits-all approach to staffing and care provision, health centers can be flexible and take advantage of the staff they have.
